Our very own Karen Cohen,
was named the recipient of the 2008 Athena Award. Athena International,
the foundation that presents awards annually to women in more than 500
communities across the United States, Canada, China, Russia, the United
Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, has held an awards event in
Youngstown for the past 16 years. Youngstown hosts the fifth-largest
annual Athena event in the nation.
Presented annually by the
Regional Chamber in co-sponsorship with The Vindicator, the Athena Award
is given annually to recognize
area business and professional women who have demonstrated excellence in
their chosen career, provided leadership in the community, and mentored or
contributed to the growth of other professional women.
Cohen
began her career in public accounting at Packer Thomas in 1990. She
obtained her bachelor’s degree as a non-traditional student from
Youngstown State University, where she also earned her MBA, while married,
working and raising two children.
Specializing in the areas of estate, trust and gift planning, she is
sought by many attorneys to assist in the tax-efficient filing of final
returns for individuals and their estates because of her knowledge of
complex tax law.
Cohen is
often called upon to educate the public about tax issues and is a frequent
speaker at Youngstown State University’s Annual Federal Tax Institute. She
also speaks to service clubs and client groups about the latest changes in
the tax law and how they may be used for tax savings and other benefits.
Cohen
also was recognized for using her position at Packer Thomas to be a strong
mentor to all staff, but particularly to women. She serves them as an
advocate, role model, sounding board and honest communicator and provides
career guidance. She also helps them obtain professional development
opportunities through training, work assignments and networking. |
